Frequently Asked Questions
What do we do during a lesson?
A typical lesson usually has 3 parts: conversation, grammar, and pronunciation.
The conversation can be about a specific topic that you choose or that the teacher suggests. It can also be simple, everyday conversation like “What did you do this weekend?” or “Do you have any plans for your next vacation?”
The grammar part focuses on a specific topic, usually based on a document. The topic is explained during the lesson, and exercises are done together to make sure everything is understood. You may also get some exercises to do at home to practice.
Pronunciation is about working on sounds that are difficult. The teacher will give you listening and repetition exercises to help improve your pronunciation.
Depending on your level, goals, difficulties, and preferences, the content of the lesson can always be adapted.
Do I need to prepare anything before a lesson?
Sometimes the teacher might give you exercises, videos, or documents to go through. But don’t worry if you didn’t have time – the lessons move at your own pace!
If I am a beginner, how many lessons do I need to learn to speak French?
There’s no single answer – it depends on many parameters:
– What is your mother tongue? (Is it close to French)
– If your native language is far from French, do you already speak another language that’s close to it?
– Can you study or practice outside of lessons? (Are you in a French-speaking environment?)
– How many lessons can or do you want to take each week?
If you study regularly outside of lessons and your native language is close to French, you could start having an every day conversation after about 6 months.
If your native language is very different from French, it might take around a year to get to that point.
But everyone is different, and the ability to learn a language varies a lot. So, there’s no exact rule!
Will the teacher send me any materials?
Yes! During the lesson, the teacher will take notes and use documents and exercises. After each lesson, those materials are sent to you. Sometimes he can also send you some extra materials.
How to book a class?
To book a course need to create an account and buy one or more lesson credits.
How do lesson credits work?
One lesson credit allows you to book one 50-minute lesson, or two 25-minute lessons.
Once you buy a credit, it shows up in your account. Each time you book, the number of credits is updated (minus 1 for a 50-minute lesson, minus 0.5 for a 25-minute lesson).
Credits are valid for 3 months from the date of purchase, unless stated otherwise (for example, in a promotion).
Validity may be extended in exceptional cases, like illness – this is decided after discussing with the teacher.
Can I cancel a lesson?
Cancellation is possible up to 24 hours before the class, in this case the credit is credited back to your account. If the class is less than 24 hours away, you can no longer cancel and the class credit is lost.
Can I reschedule a lesson?
To reschedule, you first cancel the lesson, then book a new one.
If you do this more than 24 hours in advance, your credit is credited back to your account and can be used again.
What are the benefits of subscriptions?
A subscription allows you to automatically receive a set number of lesson credits each month (4, 8, or 12).
Subscriptions also allow you to book recurring time slots, ensuring you always have a spot at the time that suits you best.
Monthly renewal means you don’t have to worry about making a payment or booking your lessons each month.
The system remains flexible: you can combine recurring and one-time bookings, and all booked lessons can be cancelled. Recurring bookings can be cancelled at any time.
Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time (see terms and conditions for details).
Is the level assessment mandatory?
No, you can skip it and buy regular lesson credits if you want.
The level assessment allows you to meet the teacher, get an initial evaluation of your level through questions and conversation, explain your goals, and ask any questions you may have.
If you purchase a level assessment, it must be scheduled before you can book other lessons.
What happens if I don’t attend a lesson?
If you are not there* at the scheduled time, the credit is used.
*If there’s a technical issue and you’re able to message the teacher but the video / audio doesn’t work, the credit may be credited back to your account.
What happens if the teacher is absent?
Very rare! But in case of an emergency, the teacher might need to reschedule.
If this happens, you’ll be notified as soon as possible and your credit will be credited back to your account.
I booked a lesson but I don’t see it in my calendar. What should I do?
Send the teacher a message with the date you booked and the date you meant to book.
If it’s a technical problem, the teacher will book the lesson for you (if the time slot is still available).
Why are some time slots never available?
The teacher lives in Japan. Depending on your time zone, some hours might never be open.
Lesson hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Japan time, UTC+9).
So, for example, in Montreal that’s from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. during daylight saving time, or 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. otherwise
The only time slot I’m available isn’t open. What can I do?
Send a message to the teacher and explain the situation.
Sometimes miracles can happen with the schedule! (But not always!)
